See below for details of our first Invoketress Dance Retreat, held on Saturday, August 13, 2016. 

Spend the day with the ladies of Invoketress Dance and tap into their hive of expertise and knowledge at the first ever Invoketress Dance Retreat! The day will be filled with dance workshops, thought-provoking talks, and delicious, nourishing food. Learn a variety of dance styles and nuances outside the norm of traditional Bellydance. Join in open discussion and dialogue around some of the pertinent topics related to Bellydance today. End the day with guided peer-to-peer massage therapy and meditation.  Open to all levels of dancers and styles. No previous dance experience necessary.

Belly-Ballet Fusion with Diana Stephens

Expand your repertoire of movement and deepen your Bellydance style! Join Diana to discuss the connections between the genres, try some ballet basics, and learn a short choreography combining the sensuous undulations of Raqs Sharqi Bellydance and the graceful precision of traditional ballet. Warm up for a full day of celebration of the female soul.

Improvisational Tribal Style (ITS) with Mary Wyga
Learn the fundamental basics of the exciting world of improvisational group dance! In this workshop, you will learn the concepts of follow-the-leader synchronized group dance such as formations, cues and transitions, and switching leads. We will work with basic and advanced signature moves and see how those moves can be built upon into complex combos. There will be lots of of dance-time to implement and experiment with these concepts for you to integrate into your own dance!

SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER: Anne Vermeyden

TOPIC: Cultural Appropriation, Hybridity, and Ethical Engagement with Belly Dance Salon’s article “Why I Can’t Stand White Belly Dancers,” with the tagline, “Whether they know it or not, white women who practice belly dance are engaging in appropriation,” put the issue of cultural appropriation right into the lap of many Western belly dancers.

This talk will address:
a) What is cultural appropriation? What is hybridity?
b) Is appropriation wrong?
c) What action should dancers take to be socially conscious in performances?

BIOGRAPHY:
Anne Vermeyden is a PhD candidate in History at the University of Guelph. Her dissertation focuses on the transnational history of belly dance in the city of Toronto. Her work explores why and how belly dance forms from across North Africa and the Middle East entered new contexts and took on new meanings in Toronto between approximately 1960 and 1990. Vermeyden also performs belly dance as a solo artist in the Kitchener-Waterloo area and offers lectures and workshops on dance history. http://annevermeyden.weebly.com/

You can have your healthy, delicious lunch and eat it too! In this food workshop, each participant will learn how to make a super food salad and fresh rolls. We will be discussing the health benefits of different ingredients and providing recipes to take home. Please make sure to let the instructors know of any food allergies/sensitivities when you sign up. At the end of this hands on workshop we will get to eat our tasty creations!

Embrace your inner intensity! In this workshop you will learn the powerful posturing indicative of Spanish dance. Ishra will teach strong poses, graceful hand movement and spirited spins. You will also learn original fusion combinations which applies the unique timing of Flamenco rhythms to a four four time signature. Flamenco and Bellydance: a potent combination.

Then join us for Twerkshop, where we’ll touch on the history of the twerk, learn basic twerking and Jamaican dancehall moves and put them together in a final choreography so fun you’ll forget it’s a twerkout! Whether at the club, a party,or dancin’ in your room, by the end of this twerkshop you’ll be ready to handle all your jelly!

Seduction & The Art of Tease with Olivia aka Olive von Topp

Learn the art of tease and release your inner seductress! Join Burlesque performer Olive von Topp as she explores the importance of confidence, connection, and sensuality in Burlesque (and Bellydance). In this beginner workshop, you’ll learn some Burlesque basics, such as walks, bumps n’ grinds, poses, as well as a simple and fun choreography designed to help you feel confident and sexy.

Massage Therapy for Dancers with Nicole Lalonde, RMT
Massage Ad-01-01
This workshop will be a great way for participants to end a day full of dancing. Each participant will be partnered up and will learn how to release each major muscle group of the body using Swedish massage, GTO release, and passive stretch techniques through clothing. Bring a yoga mat and optional blanket for comfort as we will be learning and practicing on each other on the floor.
 
5:30-5:40
Meditation and Cool Down with Eleanor

What better way to finish your day then with some soothing stretches and a relaxing meditation. Join us for some cooling yoga and a guided meditation.
